The more observant amongst our members may have noticed the small square advertisement area that is now showing up in the right sidebar of the members area.
To preserve our impartiality to any smoking cessation products and services, we’ve tried to avoid selling advertising space. However due to rising costs and our ever-increasing user base, we decided that in the short-to-medium term we would provide a small space on the website for advertisements.
Currently, we are showing advertisements via Google Adsense, which pay us a small commission each time an ad is clicked and in the very near future we intend to show adverts for NRT products on Amazon (only for those members that have decided to use NRT when they stopped smoking).
So, if you need to stock up on NRT, please click the Amazon ad in the Members Area before you buy and we will get a small cut of however much you spend!
The cash that is generated via adverts will be reinvested back into The Stop Smoking College on either new features, overheads or marketing the program.
We did explore alternative methods of increasing income, including charging members a small fee for using the program, however this was not really an option. I (Dan Dutton) originally designed this program as a way to help ANYBODY stop smoking and I feel charging for it would discriminate against those that couldn’t afford it. And because a large proportion of smokers (particularly heavy smokers) are from lower socio-economic backgrounds, charging for the program would, in essence be taking it away from those that needed it most.
We also looked at becoming a registered charity, so that we could request funding and donations from charitable organisations and individuals, however the red tape and costs dissuaded us from this course of action.
Another option that we looked at was providing premium products for those that could afford including a book and additional one-on-one sessions with a certified smoking cessation specialist. This is something that we are still interested in pursuing over the long term, so stay tuned for further information on that coming soon.
We will be monitoring the advertising space and removing any unsuitable adverts, however Google has the ability to collect information about you from it’s vast portfolio of websites (from search to Youtube) and will display ads that its automated systems think will be useful for you – we have no control over which adverts are displayed!
Whatever ads are shown to you, please be aware that none of the products or services you see are endorsed or recommended by the Stop Smoking College.
